Green hydrogen is the key to making our major industries more sustainable. For a long time, it was thought to be an unaffordable solution, but society has started to realize that there are no real alternatives if we want to stop climate change. Recent geopolitical developments have only accelerated this realization. The good news is that the cost of green hydrogen will soon start to drop – and in the long run the price will likely fall even below today’s fossil alternatives.
As China accelerates its transition to domestic renewable energy, Chinese EPC companies are embracing the rapidly emerging field of green hydrogen. From its humble beginnings 75 years ago as a small metals dealership, BIBUS Holding AG has evolved into an international network of subsidiaries operating in the fields of technology, materials, and electronics. In a bid to support the fast-emerging green hydrogen sector, the Group has recently expanded its sizeable stock of a wide range of metals to include high-performance materials used in electrolysers and fuel cells.
In order to achieve the 2030 climate targets, a significant jump in scale is required in the production of green hydrogen. The current production facilities have a capacity of megawatts, while we should have gigawatt installations up and running within eight years. This article introduces a novel hydrogen storage design that provides large-scale storage of compressed hydrogen and addresses a yawning gap in the green hydrogen value chain.
The future will see many combined-cycle power plants running on hydrogen or a natural gas/hydrogen mixture. Designing power plants that are suitable for hydrogen transition marks a crucial step on the path to low-carbon energy generation. There have been no transparent criteria and definitions of when a plant is considered H2-ready – until now. A new guideline fills this gap, assisting with reliable certification of H2-readiness and thereby ensuring safety and inspiring trust.
Most of us are exposed to a variety of fuels and energy sources each day. The more common include gasoline, natural gas, propane, and electricity. All of these can be hazardous and can create significant risks if not handled properly. We have grown comfortable, if not complacent, with most of these even though they can cause harm or damage property. Introducing a new fuel to the mix, hydrogen, should not cause us to shrink back, especially if it can bring significant benefits.
