Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Element Resources has announced its plans to build and operate a major renewable hydrogen production facility in the City of Lancaster in California, less than 100 miles from the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Element Resources will produce 20,000 tons of renewable hydrogen annually through its first phase.
On 20 January, the foundation stone of P2X Solutions’ green hydrogen and synthetic methane production plant in Harjavalta was laid. Scheduled to be completed in 2024, the facility is Finland’s first industrial-scale green hydrogen production plant that is progressing to the construction stage.

Shell International Trading and Shipping Company Limited has signed a memorandum of understanding with Alfa Laval regarding the development of a new Gas Combustion Unit (GCU) for use on liquid hydrogen carriers. The project is seen as paving the way for the safe transport of hydrogen by sea.
German electrolyzer manufacturer Sunfire and Vitesco Technologies have announced the formation of a strategic partnership, which will allow Sunfire to use the automotive supplier’s expertise to transfer its hydrogen technologies to industrial serial production, thereby opening a new chapter for both companies.
