Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. U.S. electrolyzer developer and manufacturer Electric Hydrogen has secured $198 million in financing to support the scale-up of its high-throughput electrolyzer technology and the manufacturing and deployment of demonstration projects to produce green hydrogen at large scale.

In a world first, researchers from the University of Stavanger in Norway have succeeded in running a gas turbine on 100% hydrogen. The milestone was reached in mid-May 2022 and demonstrates that pure hydrogen can be used in existing natural gas infrastructure.
