Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Innovation in green hydrogen technology is reaching record highs, according to the latest report into global patent filings. While the patent filing rate for green hydrogen production via electrolysis of water has increased steadily since the 1990s, it leapt by 160% in the second half of the 2010s.
Infinity Power, Masdar and Hassan Allam Utilities have signed a framework agreement with leading Egyptian state-backed organizations for the development of green hydrogen and ammonia production facilities in the Suez Canal Economic Zone. The first 2 GW plant is scheduled to be operational by 2026.
Nel Hydrogen US has entered into a joint development agreement with General Motors to help accelerate the industrialization of its PEM electrolyser platform. By combining their expertise in electrolysers and fuel cells respectively, Nel and GM aim to enable more cost-competitive sources of green hydrogen.
Canadian start-up energy company Greentech Hydrogen Innovations Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of VPN Technologies Inc., has entered the prototype development phase of its Hydrogen-of-Things™ (HoT) Smart Hydrogen Storage and Distribution Sensor Technology.
Engineering company Wood has been awarded the front-end engineering design (FEED) scope for Gen2 Energy’s green hydrogen production facility located in Mosjøen, northern Norway. The new 100 MW plant will be the first large-scale commercial green hydrogen production facility in Norway.
Japanese multinational Asahi Kasei has started the construction of an alkaline water electrolysis pilot test plant for hydrogen production at its Kawasaki Works location in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. Start of operation is targeted in early 2024, following construction work, equipment installation and trial operation.
Proton Motor Power Systems plc, the UK parent company of hydrogen fuel cell manufacturer Proton Motor Fuel Cell GmbH, has signed a 15-year lease agreement for a 13,500 m2 production facility, which will be used to significantly expand the company’s manufacturing, testing and development capabilities.
Hiperbaric, a Spanish developer of high-pressure technologies, has signed an agreement with Lhyfe to supply hydrogen compressors that the French green hydrogen producer will use for selected projects in Europe in the coming years. For Hiperbaric, the agreement is the largest of its kind to date.
