Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Ceres Power Holdings has signed contracts with Linde Engineering and Robert Bosch GmbH to start a collaboration to validate the performance, cost, and operational functionality of its SOEC technology. The companies plan to prepare a two-year demonstration of a 1 MW SOEC system, starting in 2024.
thyssenkrupp nucera and Unigel have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to increase the capacity of the green hydrogen plant that Unigel is developing in Bahia, Brazil, from 60 MW to 240 MW. The facility is planned to be delivered at the end of the year.
As part of the HighHy project, an international team of researchers from Germany and New Zealand is working on improving the efficiency of the emerging AEM electrolysis technology to produce green hydrogen. To make this possible, they have turned to the readily available metals manganese and nickel.
Alfa Laval has launched the first heat exchanger developed specifically for fuel cell systems. The new AlfaNova GL50 is an asymmetric gas-to-liquid plate heat exchanger suited to fuel cell systems as well as applications such as waste heat recovery, biogas post-treatment, and cooling of hydrogen from electrolyzers.
H2U Technologies and Tokyo Gas have entered a multi-year Joint Development Agreement to discover novel catalysts and develop techniques to apply those catalysts onto membranes. The companies will leverage H2U’s proprietary Catalyst Discovery Engine (CDE) to reduce the cost of PEM electrolyzers.
HIF Global and Siemens Energy have reached an agreement allowing Siemens Energy to expand its electrolyzer manufacturing capacity beyond its previously announced plans. The agreement will assist HIF Global in obtaining sufficient capacity for its planned Matagorda eFuels facility in Texas.
Israeli cleantech company H2Pro has announced its agreement with Sumitomo Corporation to partner on a variety of green hydrogen initiatives. Under the agreement, Sumitomo will integrate H2Pro’s E-TAC electrolyzers at the hundreds of MW scale, primarily for use in green ammonia projects.
Agfa has announced that its Board of Directors has validated the investment for a new industrial unit for the company’s Zirfon membranes for green hydrogen production, next to further investments in growing the current facility. The unit will be installed in existing buildings at the company’s site in Mortsel, Belgium.
