Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Utility Global has launched the eXERO Process for sustainable hydrogen production. This proprietary process marks the first time the energy industry has seen a zero-electricity electrolysis process to convert sustainable waste streams directly into high-purity, low-cost hydrogen.

As part of the MultiPLHY project, Sunfire is installing the world’s first multi-megawatt high-temperature electrolyzer to produce green hydrogen at Neste’s renewable products refinery in Rotterdam. Commissioning is expected in early 2023.
Shell has taken the final investment decision (FID) to build Europe’s largest green hydrogen plant. The 200 MW electrolyzer will be constructed on the Tweede Maasvlakte in the Port of Rotterdam. The futuristic plant will be named Holland Hydrogen I and is expected to be operational in 2025.
Oxford Flow has launched the latest version of its gas pressure regulator, the IM-S valve. The upgraded model offers an increased flow capacity of up to 30%, is designed for up to 100% hydrogen blending within gas networks and can be retrofitted seamlessly into gas distribution networks.
The National University of Singapore (NUS) has established a new research institute, the Centre for Hydrogen Innovations (CHI), with the aim of creating breakthrough technologies to make hydrogen commercially viable as a green energy source. The CHI commenced operations on 1 July 2022.
