Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. ENEOS Corporation has constructed a demonstration plant in Brisbane, Australia, to produce methylcyclohexane (MCH), a type of hydrogen carrier, using its proprietary electrochemical synthesis of organic hydride method (Direct MCH®). The opening ceremony was held on 30 January.
HyCC has selected Kraftanlagen Energies & Services to provide engineering services and Nel as a technology supplier for its green hydrogen project H2eron in Delfzijl, the Netherlands. The 40 MW plant is to produce the first hydrogen in 2026 to support the production of sustainable aviation fuels.
Researchers from the University of Adelaide have successfully split seawater without pretreatment to produce green hydrogen. The team will now work on scaling up the system by using a larger electrolyser, so that it can be used in commercial processes such as hydrogen generation and ammonia synthesis.
Linde has announced plans to increase its green hydrogen production capacity in Ontario, California, in response to growing demand from the mobility market. The company will build, own and operate the first of several planned 5 MW PEM electrolyzers to increase its hydrogen capacity.
Plug Power and Johnson Matthey (JM) have announced a long-term strategic partnership to accelerate the green hydrogen economy. JM will become an important strategic supplier of MEA components, providing a substantial portion of Plug’s demand for catalysts, membranes, and catalyst coated membranes (CCM).
Implementation of the Swedish ‘Project Air’ is moving full steam ahead. Uniper has commissioned Dresden-based Sunfire to build a 30 MW pressurized alkaline electrolysis plant, which will generate green hydrogen using renewable electricity and purified wastewater. The final investment decision is still pending.
GET H2, one of the most advanced hydrogen projects in Germany, is picking up the pace. RWE has ordered two 100 MW proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysers from Linde Engineering. RWE plans to commission the first of the two plants in 2024 on the site of its gas-fired power plant in Lingen.
Danish greentech company GreenGo Energy has announced plans to develop, in cooperation with the Ringkøbing-Skjern municipality, a green energy park based on 4 GW of hybrid solar and wind energy, which is to be fed directly to the energy park, at the core of which will be a 2 GW green hydrogen production plant.
