Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. The transport of green hydrogen in the form of iron. This is the vision of the ‘Me2H2 iron-steam process’ project coordinated by the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) and funded by the German government. The project team aims to develop a concept for its implementation on an industrial scale.
Nel will build a new fully automated production line at Herøya in Norway, doubling its capacity for production of alkaline electrolyser stacks to ~1 GW. The new line is expected to be in operation from April 2024. Total capex commitment for equipment will be around EUR 35 million.
The initial results of ongoing tests conducted at the Idaho National Laboratory show that with nearly 500 hours of full-load operation, Bloom Energy’s high-temperature electrolyzer is producing hydrogen more efficiently than other commercially available electrolyzers.
WSP USA has been awarded the engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) contract for the ACES Delta underground storage facility in Utah, USA, which will consist of two large salt caverns capable of holding a total of 11,000 metric tons of hydrogen.
Works have begun on the Hycel Technology Hub, Australia’s first hydrogen fuel cell research and development facility. Construction of the 2200 m2 facility, which is located at Deakin University’s Warrnambool campus in Victoria, is expected to be completed in late 2023.
Australian hydrogen electrolyser developer Hysata has raised AU$42.5 million in its latest funding round, exceeding expectations. Funding from the Series A round will be used to grow the company’s team and develop a pilot manufacturing facility.
New research conducted at the Aberdeen-based National Subsea Centre aims to support large-scale subsea storage of pure green hydrogen for grid-level use. The study will explore the design of optimised and safe underwater tanks made of composite materials.
To optimally utilise the advantages of a fuel cell drive, a reliable supply of hydrogen during operation and the shortest possible refuelling times are necessary. Poppe + Potthoff has developed a new valve product that allows tanks to be refuelled with hydrogen more quickly.
