Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. The Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) has developed a new reciprocating compressor (LMRC) designed to compress hydrogen as a fuel source for FCEVs. Unlike most hydrogen compressors, SwRI’s LMRC is hermetically sealed and has a linear motor design that increases its efficiency and reliability.
Advanced Ionics has announced its Early Access Program for advanced technology demonstrations with potential future customers. Utilizing clean electricity and process waste heat, the company’s symbiotic electrolyzer technology is said to enable production of green hydrogen for less than US$1/kg.
For its PtH2tP project in Jenbach, Austria, INNIO has ordered two electrolyzers from H-TEC SYSTEMS with a total output of 2 MW. With all new Jenbacher plants now considered H₂-ready, this marks an important step regarding the implementation of the company’s sustainable hydrogen product strategy.
The Atmosphere consortium, led by Iberdrola, will conduct research into new technologies associated with critical equipment used in green hydrogen production plants. Air Liquide has announced the construction of an industrial-scale ammonia cracking pilot plant in the Port of Antwerp, Belgium. Planned to be operational in 2024, the plant will make it possible to convert ammonia into hydrogen, with an optimized carbon footprint.
AFC Energy has launched its new ammonia cracker technology platform that aims to unlock the value of ammonia as a hydrogen carrier fuel. The company says it’s new platform will pave the way for greater usage of green hydrogen in hard-to-abate industries.
Lhyfe has announced that it has acquired a 49% stake in the Finnish company Flexens, a developer of renewable and green hydrogen and Power-to-X projects. The move will accelerate the commercial deployment and Finland-based projects of both entities.
