Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. On 1 June, at the ‘Make it in the Emirates’ Forum in Abu Dhabi, the UAE Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology announced its support for a strategic collaboration agreement between ADNOC, John Cockerill Hydrogen and Strata Manufacturing, aiming to manufacture electrolysers in the UAE for local use and export.
A team led by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory has developed a new catalyst composed of elements abundant in the Earth. The catalyst could make possible the low-cost and energy-efficient production of hydrogen for use in transportation and industrial applications.
Ohmium International announced today that its India-based subsidiary has been selected as the PEM electrolyzer partner of NTPC REL, the renewable energy subsidiary of NTPC, India’s largest power utility with more than 70 GW of installed generation capacity. The agreement is valid for a period of two years.
IMI Critical Engineering has successfully completed its first field test for the generation of green hydrogen using its new IMI VIVO PEM electrolyser. The pilot test saw a 200 kW electrolyser successfully complete its test program in May 2023, generating 4.0 kg/h (44.0 Nm3/h) at 30 barg of green hydrogen.
Plug Power has announced plans to develop three green hydrogen production plants in Finland, resulting in the production of 850 tons per day of green hydrogen, or 2.2 GW of electrolyzer capacity, by the end of the decade. The final investment decision is expected to be reached by 2025/2026.
Enapter AG has unveiled the AEM Multicore – the world’s first megawatt-class AEM electrolyser for the production of green hydrogen, ushering in a new era in environmentally friendly solutions for the decarbonisation of industry and the economy, and reaching an important milestone in its corporate history.
HyET Hydrogen and ENPRO Industries have signed an MoU, under which ENPRO will function as an engineering and manufacturing partner for electrochemical hydrogen processing equipment. Additionally, ENPRO will set-up and oversee the manufacture and assembly of HyET’s equipment.
Johnson Matthey (JM) and Hystar have signed a three-year strategic supply agreement to ramp up green hydrogen production. JM will supply membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs), key performance-defining components for electrolysers, as part of Hystar’s commercialisation ramp-up.
