Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. NewHydrogen, the California-based developer of a novel green hydrogen generator, has reported progress in the development of its prototype. The prototype benchmarking phase has been completed and is now available to evaluate the company’s low-cost and high-performance catalyst technology.
On 3 April, Advent Technologies held an opening ceremony for its new fuel cell R&D and manufacturing facility at Hood Park in Charlestown, Massachusetts. This facility will allow the company to expand its production capacity and fulfil the rising global demand for electrochemistry components.
Together with energy supplier Vulkan Energiewirtschaft Oderbrücke (VEO) and electrolyzer manufacturer McPhy Energy, ArcelorMittal will build a pilot 2 MW electrolysis plant and a hydrogen filling station at its Eisenhüttenstadt site. The electrolyzer will go into operation in 2024.
Nine months after the groundbreaking ceremony for RWE’s hydrogen pilot plant in Lingen, Germany, the first eight blocks of a 10 MW pressurized alkaline electrolyzer from Sunfire have arrived at the construction site of the Emsland gas-fired power plant.
Hexagon Purus is building a new production hall at its site in Weeze, Germany. With this investment, the company supplying high-pressure hydrogen cylinders and systems, and vehicle integration solutions for fuel-cell and battery-electric vehicles intends to significantly expand its production capacity.
Green Hydrogen Systems has shipped the first X-Series prototype electrolyser for site installation and tests at GreenLab in Skive, Denmark. Following installation and subject to successful product validation, the company expects to initiate sales of the X-Series 6 MW pressurised alkaline electrolyser product during Q4 2023.
Researchers from the University of Twente in the Netherlands have developed a new composite material for electrodes used in PEM-based electrolysis cells. Consisting of several earth-abundant elements, the new material outperforms the individual compounds by one to two orders of magnitude.
H-TEC SYSTEMS has announced its new Modular Hydrogen Platform (MHP) for the industrial production of green hydrogen. Standardized blocks with an electrolysis performance of 10 MW can be combined into systems with a power output of 100 MW and more, and an overall system efficiency of 77%.
