Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Hitachi Energy has unveiled the HyFlex™ demonstration unit in Gothenburg, Sweden. This hydrogen-powered generator is an integrated and scalable plug-and-play solution for temporary or permanent installation, where power grid connections are impractical, and diesel generators are not an option.
H2SITE has successfully validated the first ammonia cracker to produce high-purity hydrogen for onboard power generation using a PEM fuel cell. An integrated membrane reactor has been installed and operated on board of the BERTHA B supply ship, sailing the shores of the Gulf of Biscay.

H-TEC SYSTEMS has delivered its ME450 PEM electrolyzer to the Hydrogen Lab Bremerhaven (HLB), a research project at the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems IWES. The 1 MW electrolyzer is part of a test field which focuses on researching the interaction of wind turbines with electrolytic hydrogen production.
TES Canada has presented ‘Projet Mauricie’. Totalling $4 billion in investments for the region, the project consists of an electrolyzer and renewable energy production assets. Upon its commissioning in 2028, the project will produce 70,000 tonnes of green hydrogen exclusively dedicated to users from Quebec.
