Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. The Dutch state is stepping in as an active partner in PosHYdon through Energie Beheer Nederland (EBN). In this pilot, green hydrogen will be produced on an operational gas platform. This will be the first time that three offshore energy systems will be integrated: offshore wind, offshore gas and offshore hydrogen.
McPhy Energy has signed a contract with Berlin-based HMS Oil and Gas division to supply and commission four McLyzer 3200-30 electrolyzers, with a capacity totaling 64 MW. These units will be operated as part of a major tie-in point for the hydrogen grid at the Radeland compression station in Brandenburg.
Lhyfe is inaugurating its latest green hydrogen production site – Lhyfe Bretagne – in Buléon, France, today. With an installed electrolysis capacity of 5 MW, the site will produce up to two tonnes of green hydrogen per day, or up to 575 tonnes per year, mainly supplying local transport and the industrial processes of regional companies.
Sunfire, Salzgitter AG and the TU Bergakademie Freiberg are collaborating to roll out high-temperature electrolyser technology at an industrial scale. In the GrInHy3.0 research project, they are integrating Sunfire’s latest SOEC stack technology into the hydrogen network of the Salzgitter Flachstahl steel mill.
Versogen has announced it has reached a membrane production capacity capable of supporting 1 GW of AEM electrolyzers annually. From the company’s roots in a research lab at the University of Delaware, Versogen has scaled up the production capabilities of its proprietary PiperION® polymer by a factor greater than 2,000 times.
The South Australian Government has selected a consortium comprising ATCO Australia and BOC, a Linde company, as its preferred partners for Hydrogen Jobs Plan, which includes a 250 MW hydrogen production facility, power plant and storage at Whyalla in the Upper Spencer Gulf, South Australia.
First Graphene has revealed results from an independent study, highlighting the effectiveness of graphene-based electrocatalysts in green hydrogen production. The study found that electrodes made of First Graphene’s metal-oxide doped graphene lowered the amount of power needed to produce green hydrogen.
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and Verne, a San Francisco-based star-up, have successfully demonstrated a cryo-compressed hydrogen storage system of suitable scale for heavy-duty vehicles, marking a first in achieving the required scale for semi-trucks and representing a milestone in high-density hydrogen storage.
