Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Hy2gen has acquired kiwi AG. The acquisition includes what is currently the world’s largest operating power-to-eMethane plant in Werlte, Germany. The integration of kiwi AG marks an important milestone for Hy2gen, as it means the company is now entering into the production of renewable hydrogen and its derivatives.
GreenH Electrolysis (GreenH) has entered into a contract with Medha Servo Drives Pvt. Ltd. (Medha) to build a hydrogen production and refueling station in Jind, Haryana, to supply hydrogen for India’s first hydrogen train under the prestigious Indian Railways’ ‘Hydrogen for Heritage’ initiative.
ITM Power has signed a capacity reservation agreement with Shell Deutschland GmbH. Under this agreement, Shell has reserved the future production capacity for 100 MW of TRIDENT electrolyser stacks. These stacks are set to be manufactured between 2025 and 2026 for the Refhyne 2 project.
John Cockerill has held a formal groundbreaking ceremony for its gigafactory in Baytown, Texas, marking the company’s entry into the North American market. The facility, the first alkaline electrolyzer gigafactory in the U.S., is expected to create 200 new jobs and produce 1 GW of electrolyzers annually. Production is expected to begin in Q3 2024.
IRENA has released a comprehensive report titled ‘Water for hydrogen production’, co-authored by Bluerisk. This report provides an in-depth analysis of water withdrawal and consumption intensities across various hydrogen production pathways, highlighting green hydrogen as the most water-efficient clean hydrogen production technology.
Symbio, a joint venture between Forvia, Michelin, and Stellantis, has inaugurated its first fuel cell gigafactory, SymphonHy. Located in Saint-Fons, France, SymphonHy has a production capacity of 16,000 fuel cells, set to increase to 50,000 by 2026, making it the largest integrated fuel cell production site in Europe.
Ionomr Innovations has closed a USD 20 million Series A-4 funding round with returning lead investors NGIF Cleantech Ventures and Pallasite Ventures, supported by Shell Ventures, Chevron Technology Ventures and Finindus, and joined by Bekaert, Asahi Kasei, Samsung Ventures and SAIC Capital.
HYScale, a new EU-funded project, has been launched with the aim of upscaling an efficient, durable, sustainable, and cost-effective electrolyser technology capable of operating stably at higher current densities than the current state of the art, promising a significant advancement in green hydrogen production.
