Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Aker Horizons, a developer of green energy and industry, has applied for and been allocated 250 MW of grid capacity for its large-scale green ammonia plant under development in Kvandal outside Narvik, and 120 MW for its facility in Berlevåg, both in Northern Norway.
Next Hydrogen has met its energy efficiency targets for its ‘GEN2’ water electrolyzer technology, achieving its target cell performance of 1.90 V/cell at 1 A/cm2 and 70°C. This surpasses the 2024 and 2026 performance targets for alkaline water electrolysis set by the US Department of Energy.
ABB has joined the HyPilot project – the in-field demonstration of Hystar’s 1 MW containerized PEM electrolysers, to verify Hystar’s technology under realistic field conditions. ABB is supplying critical power technology that enables precise voltage and current control to simulate various operating regimes.
Fortescue, a global green energy, metals and technology company, has invested close to NOK 100 million (AU $13.5 million) to become a shareholder in Norwegian Hydrogen, a developer of green hydrogen projects in the Nordic regions, making it the third largest shareholder of the company.
In a ceremony held on Friday, 27 October at Rotterdam’s Tweede Maasvlakte industrial park, King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands symbolically marked the beginning of construction of a national hydrogen network in the Netherlands that will span 1,200 kilometres once completed.
Researchers in Japan have developed a new material capable of storing hydrogen energy for up to three months at room temperature, thereby increasing the efficiency of hydrogen storage and reducing its cost. Moreover, since the material is based on relatively inexpensive nickel, its cost is relatively low.
TÜV SÜD has been officially recognised as a certification body for CertifHy™, a non-governmental certification scheme for promoting certified proof of origin for hydrogen throughout Europe. TÜV SÜD has contributed its certification expertise to the development of the scheme from the outset.
John Cockerill Hydrogen has announced its entry into the US market with the acquisition of manufacturing space in Baytown, Texas, for a new gigafactory. The facility is expected to create 200 new jobs and produce 1 GW of electrolyzers annually. Production is expected to begin in Q3 2024.
