Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Dutch fuel cell company zepp.solutions has secured a €1.98 million grant from the European Just Transition Fund for the development of an advanced fuel cell systems factory. The facility is set to be established in the Greater Rijnmond region in the Netherlands.
Enoah Inc., a Japanese company specialising in the manufacturing and distribution of fuel cells, power generation, and water electrolysis systems, has placed an order for 101 AEM Electrolysers EL 4.0 with Enapter. The devices are primarily intended for use in Power-to-Power applications and refuelling stations.
Plastic Omnium has announced plans to build North America’s largest hydrogen storage manufacturing plant in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan. The facility will produce high-pressure hydrogen storage systems for medium- and heavy-duty zero-emissions vehicles, serving a major American automaker.
Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, and RFC Ambrian have co-founded Hadean Energy, a new company aiming to commercialise tubular solid oxide electrolysis technology that can produce hydrogen with 30% less electricity and help decarbonise heavy industry.
Smoltek, a Swedish nanotech company, today announced it has been awarded the first patent of a new patent family internally called Electro Catalyst Support, which is targeting the production of green hydrogen. This innovation discloses how Smoltek’s carbon nanofibers can support the iridium catalyst load in a PEM electrolyzer in a better way.
Sunfire has secured a contract to supply a 100 MW alkaline electrolyzer to a European refinery. The purchase order includes ten 10 MW modules of Sunfire’s pressurized alkaline electrolysis technology as well as the power supply units. The electrolyzer is planned to commence operation in 2026.
Researchers from The University of Manchester and the University of Warwick have finally solved the long-standing puzzle of why graphene is so much more permeable to protons than expected by theory. The discovery could lead to the development of low-cost catalysts for hydrogen-related technologies.
NewHydrogen has announced it recently entered into a research agreement with UC Santa Barbara to work with a team of chemical and materials engineers to develop a better way to efficiently split water into green hydrogen with a thermochemical approach, using heat instead of electricity.
