Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) and its subsidiary N.V. Eneco (Eneco) have established a new company called Eneco Diamond Hydrogen B.V. to develop green hydrogen and associated renewable energy in Europe. The new company was officially registered on 6 June 2023 and is headquartered in Rotterdam.
As part of ongoing efforts to develop materials that could enable alternative energy sources, researchers in Drexel University’s College of Engineering have produced a titanium oxide nanofilament material that can harness sunlight to produce green hydrogen.
APEX Group, a German developer and operator of green hydrogen electrolysis plants, has signed an agreement to acquire three strategically important plots of land in Lubmin, Germany. In the future, APEX plans to produce hydrogen on the site with up to 600 MW of installed electrolyser capacity.
Dutch PEM fuel cell technology provider Nedstack and AVL, the world’s largest independent company for the development, simulation, and testing of powertrain systems, have announced a partnership focused on the industrialization of Nedstack’s third-generation fuel cell stack platform.
CertifHy™ and Bureau Veritas have joined efforts to strengthen renewable hydrogen certification in Europe. The partnership introduces the CertifHy™ Non-Governmental Certification (NGC) scheme, providing consumers with a reliable tool to trace hydrogen’s origin and environmental credentials.
Arco Technologies Inc. has announced a partnership with Shell GameChanger aimed at validating its innovative electrolyzer technology for larger applications. Shell GameChanger will assist in every step of the project, including in building a new AEM electrolyzer capable of higher hydrogen production.
Norwegian-based HydrogenPro has successfully upgraded and significantly increased its electrolyser production capacity at the Tianjin plant in China. The recent expansion, consistent with the Q1 presentation earlier this year, has seen the capacity rise by 66%, reaching 500 MW from the previous 300 MW.
GTT has received an Approval in Principle (AiP) from the Japanese classification society ClassNK for a new concept of a scalable membrane type containment system that can be adapted to any size of liquified hydrogen (LH₂) carrier without major design modifications, as well as for the cargo handling system.
