Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. ITM Power announced today that it is commencing bidding into projects in the US market. This move allows the company to provide its electrolyser stack solutions in both CE and ASME regulated territories. Achieving this standardisation has been a significant milestone for ITM, facilitating a streamlined production process and supply chain, simplifying operations and enabling economies of scale.
The HYFLEXPOWER consortium has reported the successful operation of a gas turbine using 100% renewable hydrogen. Having tested the HYFLEXPOWER demonstrator for electricity production, the consortium now aims to extend its operation to industrial heat production and additional operational modes.
Lhyfe is starting the construction of a hydrogen production plant in the German city of Schwäbisch Gmünd. This site, which is the largest green hydrogen plant in Baden-Württemberg, will be the first to supply hydrogen directly to an industrial park. Commissioning is scheduled for the second half of 2024.
Dutch green tech scale-up Battolyser Systems has signed a €40 million financing deal with the European Investment Bank (EIB). The financing will enable the company to scale its production facility in Rotterdam towards mass production of its combined electricity storage and electrolyser stack system.
KBR has announced it has developed an advanced green methanol technology, PureM℠. Utilizing bio or captured CO₂ and green hydrogen as primary feed components, PureM provides a cleaner pathway for downstream production of fuels or high-value chemicals, which are key in materials that support a net-zero transition.
The European Commission and the Italian Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy have backed the Hydra project led by RINA. By 2025, the research project aims to create a 100% hydrogen-fuelled pilot plant capable of producing up to 7 tonnes of steel per hour, with a significant reduction in CO₂ emissions.
China’s first hydrogen-powered ship has made its maiden voyage in Yichang City in central China’s Hubei Province, marking a breakthrough in the country’s application of hydrogen fuel cell technology in inland waterway vessels. Powered by a 500 kW hydrogen fuel cell, the ship has a maximum cruise range of 200 kilometers.
Arcadia eFuels has selected Plug Power to provide a 280 MW proton exchange membrane electrolyzer system to Arcadia’s Vordingborg plant for the production of sustainable aviation fuel. A FEED study to support an FID has commenced, with the project expected to move to execution phase by mid-2024.
