Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Repsol has begun producing renewable hydrogen at its Petronor industrial center in Biscay, Spain. The 2.5MW electrolyzer can generate 350 tons per year of renewable hydrogen for industrial use, mainly in the refinery, as a raw material for manufacturing products with a lower carbon footprint.
thyssenkrupp nucera and Neste plan to collaborate on a project to incorporate a 120 MW water electrolyser into Neste’s Porvoo refinery in Finland. To this end, Neste has now signed an agreement with thyssenkrupp nucera to reserve production capacities for an alkaline water electrolysis plant.
The Dutch government is launching a subsidy scheme for smaller electrolysis projects aimed at producing green hydrogen. The amount of nearly €250 million is intended to provide 100 megawatts of electrolysis capacity, with the government hoping to assist in realising 5–10 smaller projects across the country.
thyssenkrupp nucera has opened a new office in Mumbai, India. This new site in Vikhroli in northeast Mumbai is characterized by an excellent location at one of Asia’s most important ports. The available sales and engineering competence center (hub) will also help the company grow more strongly in India.
Technip Energies has been awarded Engineering, Procurement Services and Construction Management contracts by Galp for green hydrogen and biofuels units at its Sines refinery, aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of the refinery and its products.
Electriq Global, an Israeli-based developer of the next generation of hydrogen solid carriers, has been awarded a €1.1-million grant from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) for its hydrogen powder manufacturing plant, slated to be built in the Port of Amsterdam and scheduled to begin operations in 2026.
Mattiq announced today the development of a portfolio of novel, highly durable alternatives to iridium, a rare and costly element critical to clean hydrogen production. Each alternative has the potential to meet or exceed that material’s performance, but with a much lower cost and greater availability.
Hystar AS has announced a fully automated 4 GW electrolyser factory in Høvik, Norway, which will be delivered in 2025, with construction commencing in early 2024. Furthermore, the high-tech company is expanding into North America, establishing a location in 2024 and a multi-GW factory by 2027.
