Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. The joint venture (JV) agreement worth €200 million between Everfuel A/S and Hy24 has been successfully concluded, allowing the JV to start financing the development of electrolyser capacity across the Nordics, with a special emphasis on servicing the rapidly growing EU market.
The first shipment of alkaline electrolysers to the world’s largest hub for the storage of renewable energy in Utah, USA, arrived from HydrogenPro’s plant in Tianjin, China, earlier this month. The contract includes a total of 40 electrolysers and 20 gas-separation skids, to be completed in 2023.
EVoLOH, a cleantech company, has announced that it has leased an existing industrial facility in Lowell, Massachusetts, and has begun outfitting its Manufacturing Center of Excellence to produce EVoLOH’s anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzer stacks for producing green hydrogen.
Nel has selected Plymouth Charter Township, a suburb of Detroit, Michigan, as the location for its next gigafactory. When fully developed, the factory will be among the world’s largest electrode manufacturing facilities, with a total annual capacity of 4 GW alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology.
DuPont today announced the launch of its first product dedicated to the production of green hydrogen – the DuPont™ AmberLite™ P2X110 Ion Exchange Resin. To support the production of hydrogen from water, this newly available ion exchange resin is designed for the unique chemistry of electrolyzer loops.
Elcogen has received funding for a EUR 25.4-million project to accelerate the deployment of solid oxide electrolysis technology. The grant funding has been awarded from the Hy2 Tech initiative, part of the Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI), to accelerate the production of affordable green hydrogen in Europe.
Baker Hughes has launched its latest product for hydrogen – Druck hydrogen-rated pressure sensors. Designed to offer longer-term stability and withstand harsh environments, the new sensors can be used in a variety of applications, including gas turbines, water electrolysis, and hydrogen filling stations.
Ionomr Innovations has validated industry-leading stability and performance of its AEM electrolyzer technology using proprietary Aemion+® membranes and polymers with the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and secured funding from Shell Ventures and others.
