Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) has announced that the Green Hydrogen Pilot Project constructed by the company in Kuqa City, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and claimed by Sinopec to be the largest solar-to-hydrogen project in the world has commenced operation.
Cummins has announced the buyout of Air Liquide’s 19% interest in Hydrogenics Corporation. Cummins acquired Hydrogenics in 2019, adding key fuel cell and electrolyzer technologies to its portfolio. The move reinforces the company’s commitment to these technologies and enables continued investment in them.
DENSO Corporation has announced it plans to launch a pilot program in July at its Hirose Plant that uses a solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC), a DENSO-developed device that produces green hydrogen through electrolysis of high-temperature steam, to help power and increase the sustainability of its manufacturing operations.
Energy infrastructure company Gasunie has taken the investment decision for the first part of its national hydrogen network. The investment of this first section exceeds €100 million and is being developed by Gasunie’s subsidiary Hynetwork Services. Work will start after the summer in Rotterdam.
Lhyfe has announced that its offshore hydrogen production pilot, Sealhyfe, was successfully towed 20 km out into the Atlantic and connected with the SEM-REV power hub. As of 20 June, the platform began producing its first kilograms of hydrogen, marking a decisive milestone for the future of the sector.
H2U Technologies has announced the successful demonstration of the first non-iridium PEM electrolyzer for commercial hydrogen production, marking a significant milestone for the company as it moves closer to the goal of reducing the costs of green hydrogen production
Norwegian Hydrogen has announced plans for what will become one of the largest production facilities for green hydrogen in the entire Nordic region. The factory will have a capacity of 270 MW when it is fully developed, with a production capacity of 40,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.
Cipher Neutron and Ionomr Innovations have entered into a collaboration agreement to bring innovative electrolyzer membrane technology together with advanced anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzer technology to create the first North American-made 250kW AEM hydrogen electrolyzer.
