Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. SIAD Macchine Impianti has designed four compressors for a biorefinery in Venice, to be implemented in the hydrogen production line. The order includes three hydrogen compressors with horizontal balanced opposed cylinders, powered by a 450 kW electric motor.
Skyblue Smart Equipment has announced that its ‘Tlec No. 1’ 1,000 Nm³/h alkaline electrolyzer has passed the Bureau Veritas’ HAZOP analysis and obtained its SIL assessment certification as well as explosion-proof certification in accordance with the ATEX Directive.
Siemens Energy is supplying 12 electrolyzers with a total capacity of 200 MW to Normandy, France. Air Liquide will operate them in its Normand’Hy project. Starting in 2026, its plant in the Port-Jérôme industrial zone will produce 28,000 tons of renewable hydrogen annually for industry and the mobility sector.
TECO 2030 and Pherousa Green Shipping (PGS) have signed a supply agreement for up to six Ultramax dry bulk carriers of about 63,000 deadweight tons each. Each vessel will be equipped with 12 MWs of TECO 2030 fuel cells for main propulsion onboard, enabling 100% emission-free operations.
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has reported that its 90 MPa Class liquid hydrogen (LH2) pump has successfully operated for 250 hours in a long-term durability test. The test began in April 2023 at FirstElement Fuel’s Hydrogen Distribution Hub in Livermore, CA, and will continue into next year.
Luxfer Gas Cylinders has announced an investment of over £1 million in its European base in Nottingham, where it will establish a new production facility to support ‘virtual’ gas pipelines that can distribute hydrogen across the UK and Europe. Production there is scheduled to commence in summer 2024.
Elogen, a GTT group company, has announced the signature of a new contract with Valmax Technology Corporation, a system integrator for energy solutions in the hydrogen sector, to design and manufacture a PEM electrolyser with a power of 2.5 MW and a production capacity of up to 1 ton of hydrogen per day.
Electric Hydrogen (EH2) and New Fortress Energy (NFE) have entered into a definitive agreement for supply of EH2’s 100 MW electrolyzer system to NFE’s green hydrogen project in Texas. Expected to be among the largest in North America, the site and facility are scalable to 200 MWs in the future.
