Sunfire will deliver a total of 200 MW of electrolysis capacity for two large-scale renewable hydrogen projects in Spain, supporting industrial decarbonization at existing refinery sites. Each project comprises a 100 MW electrolyzer plant that will be integrated into current operations and connected to regional hydrogen infrastructure.
The first project will be installed near Repsol’s industrial complex in Cartagena and is led by Repsol together with Enagás Renovable. The second 100 MW plant will be located at the Petronor refinery in Muskiz, near Bilbao, which is owned by Repsol and Kutxabank. Both facilities are designed to supply renewable hydrogen directly to industrial processes.
For each project, Sunfire will deliver ten pressurized alkaline electrolyzer modules, each with a capacity of 10 MW. According to the company, the plants are scheduled to be commissioned in 2029. Once operational, each 100 MW facility is expected to produce up to 15,000 tons of renewable hydrogen per year using renewable electricity.
The hydrogen produced will be used at Repsol’s industrial sites to manufacture fuels with a significantly lower carbon footprint. Sunfire stated that each project is expected to avoid up to 167,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually compared with conventional hydrogen production methods.
