Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. P2X Solutions has awarded Sunfire a contract to conduct the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) study for a 40 MW hydrogen project in Joensuu, Finland.
Nel Hydrogen US has received a firm purchase order from H2 Energy for one MC500, a containerised 2.5 MW PEM electrolyser. The system will be delivered to the Association for Waste Disposal (Verein für Abfallentsorgung, VfA) in Buchs, Switzerland, where H2 Energy has been contracted to deliver a turn-key hydrogen production and refuelling facility.

Repsol, in collaboration with Enagás Renovable, has given the go-ahead for the construction of a 100 MW electrolyser at its industrial complex in Cartagena. The company will invest more than €300 million in the project, which is expected to generate around 900 jobs across its various phases.
OMV has laid the foundation stone for one of the largest electrolysis plants for green hydrogen in Europe. The 140 MW facility in Bruck an der Leitha, Austria, is scheduled to go into operation at the end of 2027 and will produce up to 23,000 tons of hydrogen annually using renewable energy from wind, solar, and hydropower.
Agfa has inaugurated a new facility for alkaline electrolyser membranes. With the new ZIRFON production site, the company aims to meet growing market demand and contribute to the scale-up of green hydrogen worldwide.
