Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. HYScale, a new EU-funded project, has been launched with the aim of upscaling an efficient, durable, sustainable, and cost-effective electrolyser technology capable of operating stably at higher current densities than the current state of the art, promising a significant advancement in green hydrogen production.
Vallourec has inaugurated its vertical compressed gas hydrogen storage demonstrator in Aulnoye-Aymeries, northern France. The compact footprint of this modular system makes it easy to integrate into demanding industrial environments and delivers a secure large-scale hydrogen storage solution.
Lhyfe has unveiled plans for an 800 MW green hydrogen production facility in Lubmin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, targeting a 2029 operational start. The proposed plant would produce up to 330 tons of green hydrogen daily and would be integrated with Germany’s core hydrogen pipeline network.
Yara Clean Ammonia, North Sea Container Line, and Yara International are joining forces to realize the world’s first container ship that will use clean ammonia as fuel. Named Yara Eyde, the vessel will be the first to sail emission-free sea route between Norway and Germany.
In response to the need to scale up green hydrogen and power-to-X solutions to decarbonize hard-to-abate industries, Technip Energies and John Cockerill have established Rely. This new company offers end-to-end large-scale solutions, from pre-FID services to proprietary technologies, project execution, and operation and maintenance.
According to the latest patent data reported by Appleyard Lees, patent filings for innovations related to hydrogen production reached 555 in 2021 – an increase of 224, or nearly 68%, since the previous 15-year peak in 2018. Japan leads innovation in this area, followed by South Korea, the US, Europe and China.
Honeywell has announced the European launch of its 100% hydrogen-capable diaphragm gas meter. The Honeywell EI5 smart gas meter, which has been successfully piloted in the Netherlands, is capable of measuring both hydrogen and natural gas, providing adaptability across the European continent.
Vulcan Green Steel, a part of Jindal Steel Group, has commenced construction of a 5 MTPA green hydrogen-ready steel plant, located in the Special Economic Zone (SEZAD) at Duqm, Oman. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in Duqm, SEZAD, on Monday, 27 November.
