Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. A research team led by Dr. Ji Haeng Yu at the Hydrogen Research Department of the Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) has developed a new manufacturing technology for solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) stacks. The SOEC stack developed by the team has a capacity of 8 kW.
Topsoe today announced plans to build a cutting-edge factory in Chesterfield, Virginia, US. The factory will manufacture advanced, energy-efficient Solid Oxide Electrolyzer Cells (SOEC), which are essential for the efficient production of clean hydrogen and derivatives such as eAmmonia and eMethanol.
Linde’s subsidiary, White Martins, will build, own, and operate a second electrolyzer to produce green hydrogen for the southeast region of Brazil. The 5-MW pressurized alkaline electrolyzer will be located adjacent to the company’s existing air separation facility in Jacareí, São Paulo. The new plant will be powered by renewable energy from local solar and wind power projects.
After receiving an order for a 100 MW electrolyzer last year, Sunfire is now engaged in another major project: conducting the front-end engineering and design study (FEED) for a 500 MW hydrogen project scheduled for operation by 2028. Their FEED study will help the customer make a well-informed financial investment decision (FID) for the project.
Mobility technology company AVL is partnering with Red Bull Advanced Technologies, the high-performance arm of Red Bull Racing Group, to develop the next generation of ultra-high-power density fuel cell technology. The lightweight solutions are expected to be two-thirds lighter than conventional fuel cell systems.
LANXESS has developed special ion exchange resin grades within its Lewatit UltraPure range that are suitable for water treatment in PEM electrolysis. The company recommends its Lewatit UltraPure 1242 MD, 1212 MD, and 1295 MD ion exchange resins, which are optimized for this application, to ensure low TOC (Total Organic Carbon) levels.
SolydEra, Bosal Energy, and VDL have partnered to advance solid oxide electrolyzer and fuel cell technologies. This alliance combines SolydEra’s proficiency in solid oxide fuel cells and electrolysis stacks, Bosal’s leadership in developing ‘Hot Balance of Plants’, and VDL’s experience in manufacturing, industrialization, and system assembly.
ANDRITZ has acquired a 13.8% stake in the Norwegian company HydrogenPro. The company was founded in 2013 and supplies pressurized alkaline electrolyzers for green hydrogen production. The two companies already entered into a strategic partnership last year to provide integrated solutions for the supply of green hydrogen plants.
