Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. The world’s first hydrogen-powered asphalt factory, located in Kristiansund, Norway, was converted by Veidekke to produce around 3,000 tons of emission-free asphalt in 2023. In 2024, Veidekke aims to increase the production of emission-free asphalt and has, for this purpose, initiated a collaboration with Norwegian Hydrogen.
In a pivotal moment in the commercialization of hydrogen fuel cell systems, GM and Honda yesterday announced the start of production at their 50-50 joint venture production facility, FCSM. FCSM is the first large-scale manufacturing joint venture to build fuel cells.
ENDURE, a research and innovation project funded by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, kicked off in Tallinn, Estonia, on 9 and 10 January. The main objective of ENDURE is to improve the current density and stability of alkaline electrolysers, thereby elevating their performance to a new level.
Metacon AB, via its subsidiary Metacon Technology, has entered into an OEM license and manufacturing agreement with PERIC Hydrogen Technologies to manufacture hydrogen generation systems based on PERIC’s technology for pressurized alkaline electrolysis stacks.
The University of Sheffield has successfully bolstered its efforts to decarbonise the aviation industry by increasing its green hydrogen production capacity, following the successful commissioning of a new PEM electrolyser designed and built by IMI Remosa.
Hexagon Purus has expanded its primary manufacturing facility in Weeze, Germany, for the engineering and production of hydrogen infrastructure products, including systems for distribution, refueling, and stationary storage, thereby ramping up its capacity to meet growing customer demand for hydrogen infrastructure solutions.
Lhyfe and EDP Renewables have signed a 15-year Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (CPPA), under which Lhyfe will buy renewable energy generated by a 39 MWac (55 MWp) solar project in Germany developed by EDPR, through Kronos Solar EDPR, expected to be connected to the grid in 2025.
Plug Power has started operation of the largest electrolytic liquid hydrogen production plant, and largest PEM electrolyzer deployment operating in the U.S., representing a landmark achievement in Plug’s build-out of a vertically integrated hydrogen ecosystem. The plant showcases Plug’s own electrolyzer technology.
