Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Hyundai Motor Company, Kia Corporation and W. L. Gore & Associates have signed an agreement to collaborate on the development of advanced polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) for hydrogen fuel cell systems. The joint effort between the parties will encompass key aspects of PEM development.
HDEX, a global company based in the United Kingdom, has announced the launch of the world’s premier hydrogen exchange. On 1 January 2024, the first transactions were completed on the HDEX platform. This groundbreaking platform facilitates the seamless trading of hydrogen and investment in the hydrogen sector, propelling the transition to a sustainable future.
Stargate Hydrogen has announced that it has successfully passed the ISO 9001 certification audit conducted by Bureau Veritas, following the development of its Quality Management System to not only meet but also exceed the requirements of the ISO 9001:2015 standard. The certification covers all three of Stargate Hydrogen’s locations.
Chinese scientists from Tianjin University’s School of Mechanical Engineering have developed a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell with ultra-high volumetric power density, reported to be more than 80% higher than the performance of mainstream counterparts. Their findings have been published in the Joule journal.
Bloom Energy and SK ecoplant, a subsidiary of South Korean conglomerate SK Group, have announced a sale of Bloom’s electrolyzer technology to deploy hydrogen as an energy source in a large-scale green hydrogen demonstration with the Korea Southern Power Co., Ltd and local government.
Plug Power has completed the installation and commissioning of an electrolyzer system at Amazon’s fulfillment center in Aurora, Colorado. This 1 MW PEM electrolyzer, the first for Amazon, is producing low-carbon hydrogen to fuel more than 225 hydrogen fuel cell-powered forklift trucks at the site, known as DEN8.
Convion and Elcogen have successfully completed a 2,000-hour field test of Convion’s solid oxide electrolyser, equipped with Elcogen’s cell technology. The test validated the high performance and reliable operability of the solid oxide technology, which boasts superior efficiency compared to incumbent electrolyser technologies.
Norwegian electrolyser developer and manufacturer Hystar has received funding from the Research Council of Norway for a new R&D project named HYSTACK-II. The funding of over NOK 17 million (approximately €1.5 million) will be used by the company to further develop its PEM electrolyser stack.
