Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. ABO Wind has chosen Worley Consulting to complete a feasibility study for the Toqlukuti’k Wind and Hydrogen project in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, targeting green ammonia exports and further decarbonization of Braya Renewable Fuels’ refinery in Come By Chance with green hydrogen.
Cevotec has partnered with a tank manufacturer, winding equipment provider Roth Composite Machinery, and the composite engineering service provider CIKONI to investigate and showcase the effect of dome reinforcements using Fiber Patch Placement (FPP) technology for composite tanks.
Strohm recently completed an extensive hydrogen testing program on its Thermoplastic Composite Pipe (TCP) at TÜV-SÜD in Germany. Spanning six months, the assessment evaluated permeation across various pressures and temperatures using a full-scale TCP with two end-fittings. The findings were highly promising.
Gasunie and Patrizia/Storag Etzel have announced a plan to develop hydrogen storage caverns within the Etzel salt dome in Lower Saxony, Germany. Following a feasibility study, the goal is to develop and operate a multi-cavity storage facility with a total capacity of up to 1 TWh of hydrogen.
Swiss renewable energy company Axpo is partnering with Australian renewable hydrogen company Infinite Green Energy (IGE) on the Valle Peligna Hydrogen Project in Abruzzo, Italy. The project includes a 30 MW electrolyser, powered by a 45 MWp solar plant, making it one of the largest hydrogen plants in Italy.
Ansaldo Energia has successfully demonstrated the ability of a hydrogen optimized combustor for the GT36 gas turbine to operate on 100% hydrogen fuel. GT36 sequential combustion technology has achieved flexible operation from 0 to 100% hydrogen in high-pressure tests.
Singapore-based HET Hydrogen, a subsidiary of Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies, has revealed its first MW-scale electrolyser installation. Commissioned in late 2023, the company’s 1-MW electrolyser will supply hydrogen to an integrated project including a hydrogen refuelling station and a fuel cell test centre in Foshan, one of the UN-designated ‘Hydrogen Demonstration Cities’ in China.
Corre Energy has announced that the underground construction of all four salt caverns at its two Ahaus energy storage projects in Germany is now 75% complete. This represents the equivalent of over 60 hours of storage capacity at each project, with a completed target of 84 hours each and a combined generating capacity of 640 MW.
