Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. OMV Petrom, the largest integrated energy producer in Southeastern Europe, has signed two financing contracts through the EU-supported National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) for the construction of two green hydrogen production facilities at the Petrobrazi refinery in Romania.
Chevron New Energies has announced a 5-megawatt hydrogen production project in California’s Central Valley. The project aims to create lower-carbon energy by utilizing solar power, land, and non-potable produced water from Chevron’s existing assets at the Lost Hills Oil Field in Kern County.

Lhyfe has unveiled plans for its first UK plant to support the country’s net zero ambitions. If plans are approved, Lhyfe’s facility on the brownfield site of the historic Neptune Bank Power Station in Wallsend, North Tyneside, would have an initial capacity of 20 MW, capable of producing up to eight tonnes of green hydrogen per day.
