Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Corre Energy has announced that the underground construction of all four salt caverns at its two Ahaus energy storage projects in Germany is now 75% complete. This represents the equivalent of over 60 hours of storage capacity at each project, with a completed target of 84 hours each and a combined generating capacity of 640 MW.
thyssenkrupp Steel has launched its call for tenders to supply hydrogen to its first direct reduction plant in Duisburg. In conjunction with two innovative melters, this is the centerpiece of the first transformation step in thyssenkrupp’s decarbonization process as part of the tkH2Steel project.
Finnish electric utility company Oulu Energy is planning to build a 100 MW electrolytic hydrogen production plant in Oulu, northern Finland. The project’s planning partner is P2X Solutions. The investment decision is estimated to be made in autumn 2025, with the plant potentially being operational by 2028 at the earliest.
Honeywell has announced that ENEOS will develop the world’s first commercial-scale Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) project using Honeywell’s solution at multiple sites. The LOHC solution enables the long-distance transportation of clean hydrogen by leveraging existing refining assets and infrastructure.
Finland’s first industrial-scale electrolysis plant has been installed in Harjavalta, featuring a 20 MW pressurized alkaline electrolyzer by Sunfire. The project developer P2X Solutions and its partners expect production of green hydrogen in the second half of the year. A purchase agreement has already been signed.
SailH2, a Spanish green hydrogen project developer, is investing €25 million in the HUB LA ISLA H2 green hydrogen pilot center located in Andalusia, Spain. The company has ordered a 1 MW PEM electrolyzer from H-TEC SYSTEMS, aiming to produce up to 136 tons of hydrogen per year in the first phase of the project.
TÜV SÜD Product Service GmbH has become the first certification body to be accredited by the German accreditation authority DAkkS for testing and certification of hydrogen generation and electrolysis systems in accordance with ISO 22734:2019.
Plug Power has delivered several first-of-its-kind liquid hydrogen portable refuelers to transit agencies and trucking fleet customers. Plug’s HL-450D-P is a complete hydrogen refueling station on a portable platform that can be quickly and easily deployed to support fleet vehicle hydrogen refueling at either 350 bar or 700 bar.
