Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Uniper has chosen Liquid Wind to develop the NorthStarH2 project in the municipality of Östersund, Sweden. Uniper aims to produce over 100,000 tons of eMethanol for the shipping and chemical industries, offering a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels and feedstock.
Hystar has awarded German industrial engineering company thyssenkrupp Automation Engineering the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) contract for the supply of Hystar’s automated 4.5-GW electrolyser manufacturing line for its factory in Høvik, Norway.
