Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. On 3 May, Fortescue marked a new phase in the development of the company’s $550 million venture into green hydrogen production in the United States, the first of its planned green energy investments in North America, with a soil-turning ceremony and renaming of its green hydrogen facility in Buckeye, Arizona, to Arizona Hydrogen.
Plug Power has announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Allied Green Ammonia (AGA), an Australian company focused on green ammonia production, to supply up to 3 GW of Plug electrolyzer capacity for AGA’s upcoming hydrogen-to-ammonia facility proposed for the Northern Territory of Australia.
Elcogen has announced the development of a new factory in Tallinn, Estonia. Located in Loovälja Industrial Park, the new facility will expand the company’s solid oxide fuel cell and stack (SOFC) and solid oxide electrolyser cell and stack (SOEC) manufacturing capacity from 10 MW to 360 MW. Operations are scheduled to commence mid-2025.
Bright Renewables and HyGear, both part of the HoSt Group, together with the University of Twente, are set to construct Benelux’s first e-methanol system. Their joint project, ‘Towards Acceleration and Demonstration of E-Methanol’ (TANDEM), has received a total subsidy of nearly €4 million, covering half of the total €8 million investment.
Global energy merchant Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), through its Energy Transition Fund, and Uniper have signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen their collaboration on the production, transport, and marketing of green hydrogen from CIP’s HØST PtX Esbjerg project, located on the Danish West Coast, to Germany.
Stargate Hydrogen has announced the successful completion of its seed funding round, raising €42 million. This substantial investment, comprising both equity and grant instruments, is designated for scaling up its patented electrolyser technology. The materials and Stargate’s development approach promise to reduce the cost of green hydrogen to €1 per kilogram.
Plug Power has secured the first international safety and performance certification in Korea for electrolyzer manufacturing, enabling the commercial sale of Plug electrolyzer systems in the Korean market. This achievement was completed through Plug’s collaboration with SK E&S in the form of SK Plug HyVerse, a joint venture aimed at advancing the hydrogen sector within the Asian market.
Hydrogen Oman SPC (Hydrom) has awarded a consortium comprising Actis and Fortescue the rights to develop, build, own, and operate a large green hydrogen project in Oman. Currently in the feasibility stage, the project aims to construct up to 4.5 GW of wind and solar energy resources, which will power electrolyzers to produce up to 200,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.
