Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. On 26 August, Air Liquide inaugurated its 20MW electrolyser at its Oberhausen site in Germany. The plant is connected to Air Liquide’s existing hydrogen pipeline, allowing it to supply key industries and zero-emission mobility in the Rhine and Ruhr area with up to 2,900 tons of green hydrogen annually.
The HYBRIT initiative has presented six years of research results in a final report to the Swedish Energy Agency. The report shows that direct reduced iron produced with the HYBRIT process has superior characteristics compared to iron produced with fossil fuels.
AM Green Ammonia B.V. has reached Final Investment Decision (FID) for its first million-ton green ammonia project in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, India. The company aims to achieve a production capacity of 5 million tons per annum of green ammonia by 2030.
Topsoe, Skovgaard Energy, and Vestas have inaugurated a new green ammonia plant in Ramme, Denmark. The plant will produce 5,000 tons of green ammonia annually from renewable electricity, preventing 8,200 tons of CO₂ from being emitted into the atmosphere every year.
Uniper has chosen Liquid Wind to develop the NorthStarH2 project in the municipality of Östersund, Sweden. Uniper aims to produce over 100,000 tons of eMethanol for the shipping and chemical industries, offering a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels and feedstock.
Hystar has awarded German industrial engineering company thyssenkrupp Automation Engineering the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) contract for the supply of Hystar’s automated 4.5-GW electrolyser manufacturing line for its factory in Høvik, Norway.
H-TEC SYSTEMS has announced that on 30 September, the company will rebrand as Quest One. This rebranding coincides with the opening of a new production facility in Hamburg, Germany, where the company is starting automated series production of electrolysis stacks.
Power to Hydrogen has raised over USD 18 million to scale and deploy anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolysis technology. The Series A funding round brings together financial and industrial investors from around the globe to pair with U.S. and European government support in bringing the technology to market.
