Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Mobility technology company AVL is partnering with Red Bull Advanced Technologies, the high-performance arm of Red Bull Racing Group, to develop the next generation of ultra-high-power density fuel cell technology. The lightweight solutions are expected to be two-thirds lighter than conventional fuel cell systems.
LANXESS has developed special ion exchange resin grades within its Lewatit UltraPure range that are suitable for water treatment in PEM electrolysis. The company recommends its Lewatit UltraPure 1242 MD, 1212 MD, and 1295 MD ion exchange resins, which are optimized for this application, to ensure low TOC (Total Organic Carbon) levels.
SolydEra, Bosal Energy, and VDL have partnered to advance solid oxide electrolyzer and fuel cell technologies. This alliance combines SolydEra’s proficiency in solid oxide fuel cells and electrolysis stacks, Bosal’s leadership in developing ‘Hot Balance of Plants’, and VDL’s experience in manufacturing, industrialization, and system assembly.
ANDRITZ has acquired a 13.8% stake in the Norwegian company HydrogenPro. The company was founded in 2013 and supplies pressurized alkaline electrolyzers for green hydrogen production. The two companies already entered into a strategic partnership last year to provide integrated solutions for the supply of green hydrogen plants.
Accelera™ by Cummins will supply Chevron New Energies with a 5-MW electrolyzer system for the production of electrolytic hydrogen in Lost Hills, CA. The project leverages the strategic agreement between Cummins and Chevron to stimulate the commercial and industrial adoption of hydrogen and other lower-carbon-intensity fuels in North America.
Global Energy Storage (GES) and Provaris Energy have entered into a collaboration agreement to develop a gaseous hydrogen import facility at the GES terminal in Rotterdam, capable of importing both refrigerated ammonia and compressed hydrogen, with redeliveries into barges, rail, truck and the hydrogen grid (HyNetwork) operated by Gasunie.
Verdagy announced today a strategic agreement with Doral, a renewable energy developer, in which Verdagy will supply green hydrogen electrolysis systems to Doral through 2030. The agreement is global, with a focus on green hydrogen projects Doral is developing in Europe, the United States, Australia, and the Middle East.
Fortescue has officially opened its electrolyser manufacturing facility in Gladstone, Queensland, Australia today – one of the first globally to feature an automated assembly line. Spanning 15,000 m², the facility was constructed and fully commissioned in just over two years and has the capacity to produce more than 2 GW of PEM electrolyser stacks annually.
