Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. The European energy company VoltH2 has selected Sweco as its partner for the design and development of a new green hydrogen production plant in Delfzijl, the Netherlands. The production facility has received the necessary permits and is currently in the design phase.
Plug Power has announced that it has secured an order for 25 MW of proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer systems for a customer in Europe. The project will employ five of Plug’s 5 MW containerized PEM electrolyzers to reduce the carbon footprint of the company by using green hydrogen.
