Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Ceres has been awarded a further contract for the second phase of its collaboration with Shell, to cooperate in the design of a 10 MW solid oxide electrolyser (SOEC) module to produce green hydrogen for use in large-scale industrial applications such as synthetic fuels, ammonia, and green steel.
Researchers at DTU have fabricated and tested a new type of ceramic electrolysis cells with Ni-GDC fuel electrodes and demonstrated that instead of wearing out, the electrodes maintain their performance. Electrolysis cells play a key role in converting electricity from wind turbines and solar cells into fuels such as hydrogen, methanol, and ammonia.
Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) has commissioned India’s first solid oxide electrolyser for green hydrogen production at its Green R&D Centre in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The solid oxide electrolyser developed at HPCL’s Green R&D Centre is part of their efforts to advance green hydrogen production.
RWE is planning to build hydrogen-ready gas-fired power plants at the company’s power plant sites in Germany to contribute to a successful coal phase-out by 2030. Following Weisweiler in the Rhenish mining area, the company is now pressing ahead with plans for such a plant at a possible second site in Werne in the southern Münsterland region.
WEVO-CHEMIE GmbH has introduced new materials applied as liquid sealants and adhesives for automated production of alkaline, AEM, and PEM electrolyser stacks, significantly speeding up the process compared to manual assembly. These materials offer high chemical resistance, low hydrogen permeation, and good adhesion.
IMI has unveiled what it claims to be one of the first high-integrity pressure protection systems (HIPPS) to protect against overpressure propagation during the hydrogen post-production process. The new HIPPS is specifically engineered to isolate the source of dangerous high pressure, instead of relieving the excess flow in the case of an overpressure event.
Chart Industries has been chosen to supply its Howden hydrogen compression solutions to support Repsol’s €657-million expansion of its Sines industrial complex in Portugal. The expansion of the Sines facility is a strategic move towards achieving 100% recyclable high-value materials from two new Polypropylene and Polyethylene plants.
TE H2, a joint-venture between TotalEnergies and EREN Groupe, together with VERBUND, Austria’s leading electricity company, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Republic of Tunisia to study the implementation of a large green hydrogen project named ‘H2 Notos’ for export to Central Europe through pipelines.
