Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Danish electrolyzer manufacturer Green Hydrogen Systems has announced that it has reached technical proof of concept for the X-Series electrolyser prototype. This milestone follows several months of commissioning and testing, leading to third-party validation, which is the final step in the technical proof of concept.

Lhyfe has unveiled plans for its first UK plant to support the country’s net zero ambitions. If plans are approved, Lhyfe’s facility on the brownfield site of the historic Neptune Bank Power Station in Wallsend, North Tyneside, would have an initial capacity of 20 MW, capable of producing up to eight tonnes of green hydrogen per day.
Horizon Fuel Cell has announced a technology breakthrough on Anion Exchange Membranes (AEM) that could play a crucial role in realising the targeted $1/kg green hydrogen production cost at scale. Strohm recently completed an extensive hydrogen testing program on its Thermoplastic Composite Pipe (TCP) at TÜV-SÜD in Germany. Spanning six months, the assessment evaluated permeation across various pressures and temperatures using a full-scale TCP with two end-fittings. The findings were highly promising.
