Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Nordic energy company Fortum will build a hydrogen production plant in Loviisa, 90 km east of Helsinki. The plant, equipped with Stargate’s electrolyser, will be located near Fortum’s Loviisa nuclear power plant at the Kalla Test Center. Construction is set to begin in summer 2024, with commissioning scheduled for late 2025.
H2SITE has designed and constructed an ammonia cracker utilizing membrane reactor technology to produce fuel cell-grade hydrogen for the Ammogen Project located at Tyseley Energy Park (TEP), UK. This innovative project will use ammonia to store hydrogen and convert it into hydrogen in one step.
OMV Petrom, the largest integrated energy producer in Southeast Europe, will invest approximately €750 million at the Petrobrazi refinery in Romania to transform it into the region’s first major producer of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel (HVO).
Today, Yara International officially opened its renewable hydrogen plant at Herøya, Norway. The 24-MW plant at Herøya Industrial Park is the largest of its kind currently in operation in Europe, according to Yara. It produces hydrogen through the electrolysis of water using renewable energy, replacing natural gas as a feedstock.
TotalEnergies and Air Products have signed a 15-year agreement for the annual supply of 70,000 tons of green hydrogen starting in 2030. This first long-term deal follows TotalEnergies’ call for tenders for the supply of 500,000 tons per year of green hydrogen to decarbonize its European refineries.
Innoplate, a 50/50 joint venture of Schaeffler and Symbio, has inaugurated its new production site for fuel cell bipolar plates (BPP) in Haguenau, France. With an initial current production capacity of 4 million units of this strategic component for fuel cell technology, Innoplate is expected to reach 50 million annually by 2030.
Elcogen has announced that it has recently initiated a collaboration agreement under the Important Projects of Common European Interest scheme (IPCEI) with the Dutch Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) to develop advanced solid oxide electrolysis (SOE) technology for future market demands.
NOVAdev Inc., a developer of hydrogen transportation and storage technologies, plans to build a large-scale hydrogen test facility in a high desert area north of Los Angeles, California. The California Hydrogen Test and Training Center aims to advance hydrogen storage, refueling, and power systems for air, land, and marine transport.
