Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Tecnimont Private Limited, the Indian subsidiary of Tecnimont, and NEXTCHEM have inaugurated the first green hydrogen production plant for GAIL (India) Limited at Vijaipur, Madhya Pradesh, India. The facility will produce 4.3 tons per day of green hydrogen using a 10 MW electrolysis unit.
Aslan Energy Capital has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the acquisition of 35,000 hectares of land in Sonora, Mexico. The land will serve as the foundation for the pioneering ANEM (Aslan Net-zero Energy Mexico) Project, a solar-based green hydrogen and green ammonia production facility.
ITM Power has signed a 500 MW capacity reservation with a global industrial customer. This reservation secures future production capacity for the manufacturing of ITM’s electrolyser stacks through the end of the 2028 calendar year and foresees call-offs against future projects in Europe and the US.
Spanish firms Matteco and Ariema Enerxía have received EU Next Generation funding to deploy advanced technology in alkaline electrolyzers. Matteco will implement its components in a new generation of alkaline electrolyzers from Ariema, aiming to produce green hydrogen more efficiently and at a lower cost.
Norwegian floating LNG infrastructure provider Höegh LNG has signed an agreement with Deutsche ReGas, a mid-sized company in the European energy infrastructure sector and operator of privately financed LNG terminals in Germany, to realize a floating hydrogen import terminal in Lubmin.
Finnish energy company Helen has selected Sweco as the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Management (EPCM) partner for the implementation of its first production plant for green hydrogen, which will be located in Helsinki. Hydrogen production is set to start in 2026, with the aim of supplying the heavy-duty transport sector.
SoCalGas and EVOLOH, an anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzer technology developer, have completed a joint research project that resulted in enhancements to the current electrolyzer manufacturing process and technology.
ERM, the world’s largest specialist sustainability consultancy, has launched offshore trials to test key elements of its innovative Dolphyn Hydrogen process. Following six years of development, the trials are being conducted in a floating marine environment in Pembroke Port, South Wales.
