Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. A 10MW green hydrogen plant at MOL’s Danube refinery in Százhalombatta, Hungary, has entered production. The facility will produce 1,600 tonnes of carbon-neutral hydrogen annually, which will be used for fuel production, reducing the Danube refinery’s carbon dioxide emissions by 25,000 tonnes.

Researchers at ETH Zurich have developed a new technology for the seasonal storage of hydrogen that is considered much safer and cheaper than existing solutions. This method involves a reaction between hydrogen and iron oxide, resulting in iron that is easy to store and can later be converted back into hydrogen and iron oxide.
On 26 August, Uniper held an opening ceremony for the Hydrogen Pilot Cavern (HPC) demonstration plant in Krummhörn, Germany. The pilot cavern will be used to investigate and test the full potential of a salt cavern specially built for the storage of green hydrogen under operational conditions.
EWE, a northern German energy supplier, plans to build a 320MW hydrogen production plant in Emden, Lower Saxony, by 2027. Stuttgart-based consulting firm Drees & Sommer, which specializes in infrastructure, construction and real estate, has been selected to manage the project.
On 26 August, Air Liquide inaugurated its 20MW electrolyser at its Oberhausen site in Germany. The plant is connected to Air Liquide’s existing hydrogen pipeline, allowing it to supply key industries and zero-emission mobility in the Rhine and Ruhr area with up to 2,900 tons of green hydrogen annually.
