Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. EH Group has launched its EH-TRACE M-250-kW fuel cell system, developed for high-power stationary applications such as data centres, microgrids, and back-up power. The system also meets the power needs and safety standards of the maritime sector and has already secured Approval in Principle from DNV.

Nel Hydrogen Electrolyser AS, a fully owned subsidiary of Nel ASA, has been awarded a grant from the EU Innovation Fund of up to €135 million for the industrialisation of its next-generation pressurised alkaline electrolyser technology. The potential industrialisation is planned in Herøya, Norway.
Finnish technology company Proventia is partnering with UK-based fuel cell developer and manufacturer Intelligent Energy to supply new testing facilities for their high-power products. These laboratories will be located at Chelveston Renewable Energy Park in Northamptonshire, UK, with delivery scheduled for early 2025.
