Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. HydrogenPro ASA’s Danish subsidiary, HydrogenPro ApS, has been awarded a grant from the EU Innovation Fund of €16.5 million for large-scale production of next-generation electrode technology, enabling the company’s high-pressure alkaline electrolysers to produce hydrogen with even greater efficiency.
Matteco, an advanced materials company focused on solutions for decarbonizing the economy, has closed a €15 million Series A investment round backed by national and international family offices, including Grupo ASV (Spain), Napali (Chile), and Zubi (Spain).
Nel Hydrogen Electrolyser AS, a fully owned subsidiary of Nel ASA, has been awarded a grant from the EU Innovation Fund of up to €135 million for the industrialisation of its next-generation pressurised alkaline electrolyser technology. The potential industrialisation is planned in Herøya, Norway.
Finnish technology company Proventia is partnering with UK-based fuel cell developer and manufacturer Intelligent Energy to supply new testing facilities for their high-power products. These laboratories will be located at Chelveston Renewable Energy Park in Northamptonshire, UK, with delivery scheduled for early 2025.
Swedish start-up Hymeth has unveiled its new 25-kW alkaline electrolyzer. Building on its 5-kW system, which achieved a 67% efficiency rate in September 2023, the latest model demonstrates a 4–10% efficiency improvement, bringing the overall stack efficiency to 70–74%.
Ohmium International has signed a term sheet with SwitcH2 BV, a renewable energy joint venture that includes partners such as BW Offshore, to develop PEM electrolyzer solutions for a pioneering 300-MW offshore floating green hydrogen and ammonia synthesis project led by SwitcH2.
ESB and Hynamics UK recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop a green hydrogen production facility at the Port of Barry, Wales. The Barry Hydrogen Project aims to produce and supply green hydrogen to support the decarbonisation of industrial operations in the area.
Johnson Matthey (JM) has announced the opening of its new Engineering Centre in Mumbai, India. The centre will tap into India’s engineering talent, increasing JM’s capacity to deliver projects for its customers across its core licensing business and new growth areas, including hydrogen, sustainable fuels, and chemicals.
