Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Shell Deutschland GmbH has taken a Final Investment Decision (FID) to progress REFHYNE II, a 100-MW PEM electrolyser at the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rheinland in Germany. Using renewable electricity, REFHYNE II is expected to produce up to 44,000 kilograms of hydrogen per day to partially decarbonise site operations.
Ceres has signed a global long-term licence agreement for the manufacture of its proprietary solid oxide electrolyser cell (SOEC) technology with a global original equipment manufacturer (OEM) headquartered in the Asia Pacific region. The agreement provides revenues for licence fees, engineering services and hardware over multiple years.
Elcogen has partnered with AVL List GmbH to develop solid oxide electrolyser cell (SOEC) stack modules for MW-scale hydrogen production plants. This project brings together the R&D efforts of both partners in their respective IPCEI Hy2Tech programs in Estonia/Finland and Austria.
3M has completed a strategic investment in Ohmium International, a developer of PEM electrolyzer systems for green hydrogen production. This investment is part of 3M’s commitment to advancing technologies that support the transition to a low-carbon economy and may also help the company further decarbonize its own operations.
Tecnimont Private Limited, the Indian subsidiary of Tecnimont, and NEXTCHEM have inaugurated the first green hydrogen production plant for GAIL (India) Limited at Vijaipur, Madhya Pradesh, India. The facility will produce 4.3 tons per day of green hydrogen using a 10 MW electrolysis unit.
Aslan Energy Capital has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the acquisition of 35,000 hectares of land in Sonora, Mexico. The land will serve as the foundation for the pioneering ANEM (Aslan Net-zero Energy Mexico) Project, a solar-based green hydrogen and green ammonia production facility.
ITM Power has signed a 500 MW capacity reservation with a global industrial customer. This reservation secures future production capacity for the manufacturing of ITM’s electrolyser stacks through the end of the 2028 calendar year and foresees call-offs against future projects in Europe and the US.
Spanish firms Matteco and Ariema Enerxía have received EU Next Generation funding to deploy advanced technology in alkaline electrolyzers. Matteco will implement its components in a new generation of alkaline electrolyzers from Ariema, aiming to produce green hydrogen more efficiently and at a lower cost.
