Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Yara International has officially opened its new ammonia import terminal in Brunsbüttel, Germany. Strategically located on the North Sea and Kiel Canal, the terminal can handle up to three million tonnes of low-emission ammonia imports annually, equivalent to 530,000 tonnes of hydrogen.
Saipem has unveiled IVHY™ 100, a 100-MW green hydrogen production solution leveraging Nel’s alkaline electrolyser technology. The solution is designed and industrialized to be scalable, modular, and facilitate the installation and commissioning of large-scale systems.
The Slovenian start-up ReCatalyst and the German spin-off company ionysis GmbH are collaborating on the development of next-generation fuel cells as part of the ENABLER project, funded by the European Innovation Council (EIC). Air Products has completed the sale of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) process technology and equipment business to Honeywell for $1.81 billion. First announced in July 2024, closing conditions for the transaction have been fully met and regulatory approvals received.
The Clean Hydrogen Innovation Programme (CHIP) has launched its first three innovation projects aimed at addressing critical challenges in the hydrogen supply chain, focusing on hydrogen compression, purification costs, and the economic and carbon impacts of distribution and storage.
On 19 September, Ecoclean and the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW) have commissioned the first production-ready EcoLyzer electrolyser. The P200 alkaline system, which consists of two modular units with a combined output of 1 MW, can produce around 200 Nm³/h of hydrogen.
