Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. IMI is supplying a 2 MW PEM electrolyser for the Hydrogen Valley project under development in Lamezia Terme, Italy. The installation will be located on the brownfield site of the former SIR industrial complex and is designed to produce 400 Nm³/h of green hydrogen at 40 barg – approximately 36 kg/h.
AVL and Niterra have announced a strategic partnership to jointly develop and industrialise solid oxide electrolyser cell (SOEC) technology for green hydrogen production. The collaboration brings together AVL’s expertise in energy and mobility system integration with Niterra’s decades of experience in ceramic-based electrochemical technologies.
Ceres Power has announced that its first megawatt-scale solid oxide electrolyser cell (SOEC) demonstrator system – located at Shell’s Technology Centre in Bangalore, India – is now operational and producing hydrogen.

The Hydrohub MegaWatt Test Centre, located at EnTranCe – Centre of Expertise Energy in Groningen, the Netherlands, has successfully produced its first green hydrogen under high pressure and at elevated temperatures (up to 80 °C).
Samsung E&A has announced the launch of CompassH2, a green hydrogen production plant solution developed in collaboration with Norwegian electrolyser manufacturer Nel. According to Samsung E&A, the system is designed to deliver a high level of performance and cost-competitiveness by integrating engineering services with Nel’s electrolyser technology.
Gasunie and Storag Etzel have begun injecting hydrogen into two repurposed salt caverns in Etzel, Lower Saxony, as part of the H2CAST Etzel pilot project. Approximately 90 tonnes of hydrogen are being delivered from Plug Power’s production site in Werlte, Germany, and stored underground in the caverns.
