Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. IMI is supplying a 4 MW PEM electrolyser to the SARPOM Refinery in Trecate, Novara, Italy, operated by IP Gruppo API. The renewable hydrogen produced will replace a portion of the non-renewable hydrogen currently used in refining processes.

Sunfire is delivering a 10 MW electrolyzer to the port area of Bilbao for Basque Hydrogen, a consortium led by Petronor – a subsidiary of Repsol – in collaboration with Enagás Renovable and the Ente Vasco de la Energía, the Basque Government’s energy agency. Repsol will use the plant to produce green hydrogen to power a nearby e-fuel facility.
Quest One will supply two PEM electrolyzers for a mobility project of Regional Transport Cologne GmbH (RVK). The engineering firm Ingenion is building a hydrogen filling station in Mechernich-Peternheide, a former German Armed Forces site, scheduled to go into operation at the end of 2026.
