Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. thyssenkrupp nucera has been commissioned to carry out a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) study for a large-scale hydrogen project in Europe. The planned water electrolysis plant will have a capacity of approximately 600 MW. An undisclosed customer will use the green hydrogen produced to decarbonise hard-to-abate industries.
Researchers at the Florida A&M University–Florida State University College of Engineering (FAMU-FSU) have developed a liquid hydrogen storage and delivery system designed to support future hybrid-electric aircraft. The system integrates fuel storage, thermal management, and flow control into a single unit, aiming to address several of the technical challenges associated with hydrogen-powered flight.
thyssenkrupp nucera and Fraunhofer IKTS have opened a pilot production facility for solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) stacks in Arnstadt, Thuringia, Germany. The plant, inaugurated on 27 May, marks the next phase of the partners’ strategic collaboration to industrialise high-temperature electrolysis technology for green hydrogen production.
IMI is supplying a 2 MW PEM electrolyser for the Hydrogen Valley project under development in Lamezia Terme, Italy. The installation will be located on the brownfield site of the former SIR industrial complex and is designed to produce 400 Nm³/h of green hydrogen at 40 barg – approximately 36 kg/h.
