Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. The Hydrohub MegaWatt Test Centre, located at EnTranCe – Centre of Expertise Energy in Groningen, the Netherlands, has successfully produced its first green hydrogen under high pressure and at elevated temperatures (up to 80 °C).
Samsung E&A has announced the launch of CompassH2, a green hydrogen production plant solution developed in collaboration with Norwegian electrolyser manufacturer Nel. According to Samsung E&A, the system is designed to deliver a high level of performance and cost-competitiveness by integrating engineering services with Nel’s electrolyser technology.
Gasunie and Storag Etzel have begun injecting hydrogen into two repurposed salt caverns in Etzel, Lower Saxony, as part of the H2CAST Etzel pilot project. Approximately 90 tonnes of hydrogen are being delivered from Plug Power’s production site in Werlte, Germany, and stored underground in the caverns.
ITM Power has signed a contract to supply a 5 MW electrolyser to Westnetz GmbH, a Dortmund-based German distribution system operator for electricity and gas. Westnetz will integrate the containerised NEPTUNE V unit for a public transport operator that is a subsidiary of a German utility.
A 3 MW green hydrogen plant will be built in Vilnius, Lithuania, under a full-scope EPC contract signed between MT Group, Vilnius Heat Networks, and Vilnius City Municipality. Valued at approximately €10 million, the project is scheduled to begin operations in the first half of 2026.
HORIBA has expanded its range of fuel cell test stations with the introduction of the C05-LT, a compact 100 W benchtop system designed for single-cell PEM fuel cell testing.
Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies has secured official approval to build and operate the world’s largest commercial hydrogen storage facility using Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) technology at Chempark Dormagen in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
Asahi Kasei has launched a joint demonstration project with Nobian, Furuya Metal, and Mastermelt to recycle metals, including precious metals, from the cells and electrodes used in electrolyzers for caustic soda production.
