Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Air Liquide and TotalEnergies have announced the creation of TEAL Mobility, a joint venture equally owned by both companies. TEAL Mobility aims to accelerate the development of hydrogen for heavy-duty trucks by establishing a network of over 100 stations across major European corridors within the next decade.
Baker Hughes has announced several milestones supporting the growth of the hydrogen economy, as part of the company’s broader strategy in new energy. The milestones include advancements in the company’s hydrogen-enabling technologies, as well as progress in executing several customers’ hydrogen projects and new collaborations in the sector.
Cleveland-Cliffs has successfully completed a hydrogen injection trial at its Indiana Harbor #7 blast furnace, the largest blast furnace in North America. This represents the second Cleveland-Cliffs blast furnace to utilize hydrogen as a reductant and fuel source, following the successful trial at Middletown Works in May 2023.
Lhyfe has announced that the operating results of its offshore hydrogen production pilot platform, Sealhyfe, which returned to dock in November 2023 after 14 months of testing, including in particularly tough conditions, confirm that the initial objectives have been met, marking a significant advancement for the company.
The world’s first hydrogen-powered asphalt factory, located in Kristiansund, Norway, was converted by Veidekke to produce around 3,000 tons of emission-free asphalt in 2023. In 2024, Veidekke aims to increase the production of emission-free asphalt and has, for this purpose, initiated a collaboration with Norwegian Hydrogen.
In a pivotal moment in the commercialization of hydrogen fuel cell systems, GM and Honda yesterday announced the start of production at their 50-50 joint venture production facility, FCSM. FCSM is the first large-scale manufacturing joint venture to build fuel cells.
ENDURE, a research and innovation project funded by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, kicked off in Tallinn, Estonia, on 9 and 10 January. The main objective of ENDURE is to improve the current density and stability of alkaline electrolysers, thereby elevating their performance to a new level.
Metacon AB, via its subsidiary Metacon Technology, has entered into an OEM license and manufacturing agreement with PERIC Hydrogen Technologies to manufacture hydrogen generation systems based on PERIC’s technology for pressurized alkaline electrolysis stacks.
