Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Siltrax, a Sydney-based fuel cell innovation company focused on transforming the hydrogen industry, has introduced its groundbreaking, patented silicon-based fuel cell technology, which leverages the unique characteristics of silicon to deliver enhanced performance, durability, and cost-efficiency.
Advanced Ionics has announced that Shell International Exploration and Production Inc., through its Shell GameChanger program, will sponsor a pilot project aimed at testing Advanced Ionics’ water-vapor electrolyzer technology to produce low-cost hydrogen.
H-TEC SYSTEMS will supply a 1-MW PEM electrolyzer for a green hydrogen project on the Spanish island of Fuerteventura. Led by IR Maxoinversiones, the project aims to decarbonize mobility on the island, using wind and solar energy from the company’s photovoltaic plant to produce 100% renewable, emission-free hydrogen.
Hygreen Energy has launched its first Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) electrolyzer system. Customizable to generate up to 100 Nm³/h (500 kW) of hydrogen and operating across a load range of 10% to 120%, the AEM system is designed for easy installation and operation as a fully integrated plug-and-play package.
Ohmium has announced a strategic partnership with Ten08 Energy, a Houston-based clean ammonia project developer. This collaboration will see Ohmium’s PEM electrolyzer solutions supply green hydrogen for Ten08 Energy’s 500-MW clean ammonia project on the Gulf coast of Texas, USA.
Thermax has announced a strategic collaboration with Ceres. The two companies have entered a non-exclusive, global license agreement for Thermax to manufacture, sell, and service stack array modules (SAM) based on Ceres’s advanced solid oxide electrolysis (SOEC) technology
Battolyser Systems, the Dutch manufacturer of an electrolyser with battery functionality, has raised €30 million in Series A funding from Global Cleantech Capital, Innovation Industries, and Invest-NL. The company will use the funding to scale its operations and bring its next-generation electrolyser to market in 2025.
Sunfire has been awarded a contract for a 100-MW alkaline electrolyzer at RWE’s hydrogen site in Lingen, Germany. The order comes a few days after RWE’s final investment decision for its largest hydrogen project to date, which is scheduled to begin operation by the end of 2027.
