Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Hydrogen fuel cell system manufacturer Hyzon has announced the start of production (SOP) of its single-stack 200-kW fuel cell system (FCS) at its facility in Bolingbrook, Illionois, USA. This enables the company to manufacture standardized FCSs at volume for commercial sale, further accelerating the decarbonization of heavy-duty industries.
E.ON Hydrogen has selected ANDRITZ to conduct an engineering study for an electrolyzer plant in Essen, Germany. The contract includes feasibility and safety studies for the entire plant, covering hydrogen production, compression, storage, and trailer loading bays.

Plug Power has signed a binding framework agreement with Allied Green Ammonia (AGA), an Australian company focused on green ammonia production, to finalize a supply agreement for 3 GW of electrolyzer capacity for AGA’s hydrogen-to-ammonia plant in Australia.
Accelera™ by Cummins has inaugurated its new electrolyzer manufacturing plant in Guadalajara, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. The plant has the capacity to produce 500 MW of the company’s HyLYZER® 1000 PEM electrolyzers annually, scalable to more than 1 GW per year in the future, and is expected to create 150 highly skilled jobs in the region.
Yara International has officially opened its new ammonia import terminal in Brunsbüttel, Germany. Strategically located on the North Sea and Kiel Canal, the terminal can handle up to three million tonnes of low-emission ammonia imports annually, equivalent to 530,000 tonnes of hydrogen.
Saipem has unveiled IVHY™ 100, a 100-MW green hydrogen production solution leveraging Nel’s alkaline electrolyser technology. The solution is designed and industrialized to be scalable, modular, and facilitate the installation and commissioning of large-scale systems.
The Slovenian start-up ReCatalyst and the German spin-off company ionysis GmbH are collaborating on the development of next-generation fuel cells as part of the ENABLER project, funded by the European Innovation Council (EIC). The companies have now made significant progress in their technical development.
