Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Hygreen Energy, a global electrolyzer manufacturer and hydrogen technology developer, is set to significantly increase its presence in Europe by establishing an electrolyzer manufacturing facility, launching a technology development program, and building green hydrogen production plants in Spain.
Hypermotive has unveiled X-M1, a unique platform for hydrogen fuel cell-based power generation tailored to marine applications. Developed in collaboration with Honda, X-M1 is a scalable, modular, hydrogen fuel cell power system that makes clean energy transition more accessible and achievable for maritime operators.
Researchers at ETH Zurich have developed a new technology for the seasonal storage of hydrogen that is considered much safer and cheaper than existing solutions. This method involves a reaction between hydrogen and iron oxide, resulting in iron that is easy to store and can later be converted back into hydrogen and iron oxide.
On 26 August, Uniper held an opening ceremony for the Hydrogen Pilot Cavern (HPC) demonstration plant in Krummhörn, Germany. The pilot cavern will be used to investigate and test the full potential of a salt cavern specially built for the storage of green hydrogen under operational conditions.
EWE, a northern German energy supplier, plans to build a 320MW hydrogen production plant in Emden, Lower Saxony, by 2027. Stuttgart-based consulting firm Drees & Sommer, which specializes in infrastructure, construction and real estate, has been selected to manage the project.
On 26 August, Air Liquide inaugurated its 20MW electrolyser at its Oberhausen site in Germany. The plant is connected to Air Liquide’s existing hydrogen pipeline, allowing it to supply key industries and zero-emission mobility in the Rhine and Ruhr area with up to 2,900 tons of green hydrogen annually.
The HYBRIT initiative has presented six years of research results in a final report to the Swedish Energy Agency. The report shows that direct reduced iron produced with the HYBRIT process has superior characteristics compared to iron produced with fossil fuels.
AM Green Ammonia B.V. has reached Final Investment Decision (FID) for its first million-ton green ammonia project in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, India. The company aims to achieve a production capacity of 5 million tons per annum of green ammonia by 2030.
