Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. DNV has released a new standard, Electrolyser Systems DNV-ST-J301, embedded in DNV’s certification framework for the equipment and facilities used in producing hydrogen and its derivatives through water electrolysis.
Hygreen Energy has delivered a 25-MW electrolyzer system to Huadian Weifang Power Generation, located in Weifang, Shandong, China. This marks the largest hydrogen production initiative in the region to date.
