Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. The solid-oxide electrolysis (SOE) team at the Dutch research institute TNO has made an important step towards the application of the technology in an industrial environment by realizing the fabrication and testing of solid-oxide cells with a cell size 4–5 times larger than the current industry standards.
Nel will build a new fully automated production line at Herøya in Norway, doubling its capacity for production of alkaline electrolyser stacks to ~1 GW. The new line is expected to be in operation from April 2024. Total capex commitment for equipment will be around EUR 35 million.
The initial results of ongoing tests conducted at the Idaho National Laboratory show that with nearly 500 hours of full-load operation, Bloom Energy’s high-temperature electrolyzer is producing hydrogen more efficiently than other commercially available electrolyzers.

Brazilian chemical company Unigel is investing of USD 120 million in the development of the first industrial-scale green hydrogen plant in Brazil. Incorporating electrolyzer technology by thyssenkrupp nucera, the plant is expected to come online in late 2023.
Johnson Matthey (JM), a global sustainable technologies company, has announced that it is building an £80 million gigafactory at its existing site in Royston, UK, to scale up the manufacture of hydrogen fuel cell components. The site is expected to be in operation by H1 2024.
The German electrolyzer manufacturer is the first EU-based green hydrogen company to receive an investment from Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund. With its dedicated investment program, Amazon supports visionary companies that will accelerate its path to net zero.
Utility Global has launched the eXERO Process for sustainable hydrogen production. This proprietary process marks the first time the energy industry has seen a zero-electricity electrolysis process to convert sustainable waste streams directly into high-purity, low-cost hydrogen.
As part of the MultiPLHY project, Sunfire is installing the world’s first multi-megawatt high-temperature electrolyzer to produce green hydrogen at Neste’s renewable products refinery in Rotterdam. Commissioning is expected in early 2023.
Shell has taken the final investment decision (FID) to build Europe’s largest green hydrogen plant. The 200 MW electrolyzer will be constructed on the Tweede Maasvlakte in the Port of Rotterdam. The futuristic plant will be named Holland Hydrogen I and is expected to be operational in 2025.
