Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Stargate Hydrogen Solutions has been awarded a €3 million grant from the European Commission for the delivery of an electrolyser that will play a vital role in a Horizon Europe offshore wind energy project aiming to demonstrate the complete green hydrogen value chain on the Canary Islands.
Djewels B.V., 100% owned by HyCC, has contracted McPhy for the electrolyser supply and Technip Energies for the design and construction of the planned 20 MW green hydrogen plant. The contract is subject to a final investment decision for the project, which HyCC aims to take later this year.
Elogen, a GTT group company, has announced the signature of a contract with CrossWind, a joint venture between Shell and Eneco for the development of the Hollandse Kust Noord (HKN) offshore wind project, to design and manufacture a PEM electrolyser with a power of 2.5 MW.
ITM Power has announced it is partnering with Mott Corporation. Leveraging both companies’ expertise in science and technology, ITM and Mott are collaborating to further advance porous transport layers (PTL), which are a key component of proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis.
China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) has announced that the Green Hydrogen Pilot Project constructed by the company in Kuqa City, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and claimed by Sinopec to be the largest solar-to-hydrogen project in the world has commenced operation.
Cummins has announced the buyout of Air Liquide’s 19% interest in Hydrogenics Corporation. Cummins acquired Hydrogenics in 2019, adding key fuel cell and electrolyzer technologies to its portfolio. The move reinforces the company’s commitment to these technologies and enables continued investment in them.
DENSO Corporation has announced it plans to launch a pilot program in July at its Hirose Plant that uses a solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC), a DENSO-developed device that produces green hydrogen through electrolysis of high-temperature steam, to help power and increase the sustainability of its manufacturing operations.
Energy infrastructure company Gasunie has taken the investment decision for the first part of its national hydrogen network. The investment of this first section exceeds €100 million and is being developed by Gasunie’s subsidiary Hynetwork Services. Work will start after the summer in Rotterdam.
