Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. At its Stuttgart-Feuerbach location, Bosch has begun volume production of its fuel cell power module. Nikola Corporation, based in the United States, will serve as the pilot customer with its Class 8 hydrogen fuel cell electric truck, which is scheduled to enter the North American market in the third quarter of 2023.
Superglass, a UK manufacturer of glass mineral wool insulation, has entered into a strategic partnership with Carlton Power, an independent energy infrastructure development company, to supply it with green hydrogen for its manufacturing facility at Stirling, Scotland.
Johnson Matthey has signed an investment agreement with the Jiading District in Shanghai to help accelerate the hydrogen economy in China. The investment concerns a new catalyst coated membrane (CCM) factory, which is to provide CCM production capability for PEM fuel cell applications and PEM electrolysers.
Xynteo, in partnership with the SED Fund, Technip Energies, and Research and Innovation Circle of Hyderabad, has announced the launch of Energy Leap, Asia’s first end-to-end clean hydrogen technology accelerator focused on driving sustainable energy innovation in India.
Rio Tinto and Sumitomo Corporation will build a first-of-a-kind hydrogen plant in Gladstone, Australia, as part of a AUD 111.1 million program aimed at lowering carbon emissions from the alumina refining process. Construction will start in 2024, and the plant is expected to be operational by 2025.
Bosch has announced that it plans to launch its water treatment systems for use in green hydrogen production in 2024. Designed by Bosch Manufacturing Solutions, the new systems eliminate the need for chemicals in water treatment, making them environmentally friendly, according to the company.
Nel Hydrogen US has been granted USD 5.6 million in funding from the US Department of Defense for accelerating advanced PEM electrolyser stack development, in collaboration with the Engineer Research and Development Center-Construction Engineering Research Laboratory.
With today’s listing, thyssenkrupp has successfully floated its hydrogen business thyssenkrupp nucera on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange (Prime Standard). The gross proceeds from the IPO of around €526 million will go to thyssenkrupp nucera and will be invested in the further growth of the hydrogen business.
