Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Today, H-TEC SYSTEMS held the official groundbreaking ceremony for its new factory in Hamburg’s Rahlstedt quarter. The new H-TEC SYSTEMS Stack Manufacturing & Development Center will combine PEM electrolysis stack development, production, testing and service.
Researchers from the University of Alberta in Canada have developed a new catalyst that could revolutionize how we generate power and purify water. When placed in any type of water and provided with a small amount of power, the catalyst produces hydrogen along with distilled water that is safe to drink.
TÜV Rheinland has updated its certification program for hydrogen. In doing so, the testing service provider has implemented the latest developments and requirements of the market. For example, the standard now incorporates supplementing directives 2018/2001 of the European Union’s ‘Renewable Energy Directive II.’
dynaCERT and Cipher Neutron have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Molibdenos y Metales (Molymet) to jointly develop, produce and market state-of-the-art hydrogen technology, including AEM electrolyser technology, that will be custom designed to produce green hydrogen for Molymet’s facilities.
Linde has signed a long-term agreement to supply green hydrogen to Evonik. The company will build, own and operate a 9 MW alkaline electrolyzer plant on Jurong Island, Singapore, to produce green hydrogen, which Evonik will use to manufacture methionine, an essential component in animal feed.
HydrogenPro and ANDRITZ have partnered to jointly scale up manufacturing and assembly of electrolysers for the European market. The collaboration will bring together HydrogenPro’s expertise in high-pressure alkaline electrolyser technology with ANDRITZ’s competence in manufacturing and assembly.
RWE and badenova have presented their plans to develop a centre for the production, transport and distribution of green hydrogen on the Upper Rhine in Germany. The project comprises a 50 MW electrolysis plant and an 8.5 km hydrogen pipeline. Construction of the pipeline is expected to begin in early 2024.
Ionomr Innovations, a Canadian company designing and manufacturing next-generation ion exchange membranes and polymers, is collaborating with Sunfire to develop an AEM electrolyzer in the upper double-digit kW range for industrial scale-up using Ionomr’s Aemion+® anion exchange membranes.
