Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Accelera™ by Cummins, the zero-emissions business segment of Cummins Inc., today marked the start of operations for electrolyzer production in Fridley, Minnesota – its first electrolyzer production site in the United States. Nel Hydrogen has ordered three SIAD MI compressors to be combined with a new 20 MW electrolysis plant that will supply the Ovako rolling mill in Hofors, Sweden. Cleveland-Cliffs has successfully completed a hydrogen injection trial at its Middletown Works blast furnace. This groundbreaking introduction of hydrogen gas as an iron reducing agent in the blast furnace is the first-ever use of this carbon-friendly technology in the Americas region.
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has signed a partnership agreement with thyssenkrupp. Under this agreement, the two organisations will collaborate on large-scale production and supply of green hydrogen and other green energy carriers, as well as their transport.
Electric Hydrogen (EH), a manufacturer of advanced, industrial-scale electrolyzers, has announced the location of its first factory in Devens, Massachusetts. The factory will have an annual manufacturing capacity of 1.2 GW, with production of EH2’s 100 MW electrolyzers commencing in Q1 2024.
