VoltH2 secures permit for 20 MW green hydrogen plant in Gelsenkirchen

VoltH2 has received the BImSchG permit for the construction and operation of its 20 MW electrolysis plant at the Klimahafen in Gelsenkirchen. The permit marks a key milestone in the company’s final investment decision process in Germany.

The planned PEM electrolyser will have a capacity of 20 MW, enabling the production of approximately 1,800 tons of RFNBO-compliant green hydrogen per year and avoiding about 23,000 tons of CO₂ emissions. Supported by a grant from the Ministry of Economics, Industry, Climate Protection and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the project forms part of the HyPerformer Program.

“Thanks to the close cooperation with the city of Gelsenkirchen, Gelsenlog, and DMT Energy Engineers/ENCOS, we can now effectively further develop this plant,” said Arno Luisman, CEO of VoltH2. “The permit is an important milestone on the way to the final investment decision for the plant.”

VoltH2’s 25,000-square-meter site at the Klimahafen is strategically located near major industrial players. The site also allows for the future construction of a hydrogen refueling station, enabling regional transport operators to transition to hydrogen-powered vehicles without developing their own logistics. Additionally, a tube trailer filling station is planned to serve offsite customers.
