Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Plug Power has been awarded an order to deliver a 1 GW electrolyzer to H2 Energy Europe. Planned for a green hydrogen production complex in Denmark, this is the largest-capacity electrolyzer installation in the world to date.
On Friday, 13 May, Spanish King Felipe VI inaugurated Iberdrola’s green hydrogen plant in Puertollano. The solar-powered facility will be able to produce up to 3,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year.
The new funding round, led by Doosan Corporation, will support the development and prototype of Versogen’s next-generation electrolyzer stacks and expand the production of their patented anion exchange membranes (AEM).
Poppe + Potthoff has developed a material specially designed for hydrogen applications. Components made of PPH2 can be designed with thinner walls than those made of stainless steel, resulting in weight and cost savings.
The investment will support Elcogen’s planned expansion of its facilities in Tallinn to create a new, automated production line for solid oxide fuel cells and stacks, initially scaled at 25 MW/year, rising to 50 MW/year (equivalent to 100–200 MW in electrolysis mode).
Bosch has announced its plans to develop components for electrolyzers, drawing on its expertise in fuel cell technology. The company will invest up to €500 million in this new area of business by 2030.
U.S. utility Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is launching a comprehensive end-to-end hydrogen study whose centrepiece is a large-scale project called ‘Hydrogen to Infinity’, which will blend hydrogen and natural gas in a stand-alone transmission pipeline system.
In a bid to contribute to the economically viable production of electrolyzers and fuel cells, Fraunhofer IWU has designed Reference-factory.H2. The concept provides both a design for guidance and a modular system based on new and specifically optimized technologies.
