Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Smoltek Innovation AB has signed a collaboration agreement with an unspecified ‘large international manufacturer’ of materials for electrolyzers to integrate its nanofiber-based cell material into PEM electrolyzers.

In a bid to contribute to the economically viable production of electrolyzers and fuel cells, Fraunhofer IWU has designed Reference-factory.H2. The concept provides both a design for guidance and a modular system based on new and specifically optimized technologies.
TNO, Johnson Matthey, Bekaert, and Schaeffler have formed a partnership to develop a new generation of electrolysers. The consortium aims to develop cells to be used within electrolysis with the components optimized to work together for a step-change in efficiency.
